After twenty years of VMware in production, I run Proxmox VE at home: two nodes hosting several Windows Server virtual machines that I use for practice and testing (and occasionally for breaking things on purpose).
- Backups two ways: Proxmox Backup Server and Veeam, so I can compare the two and practice restores.
- GPU passthrough: an NVIDIA GPU passed through to a Linux guest that runs large language models locally.
- Microsoft 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop practice: Conditional Access, Intune, Autopilot and Windows 365, alongside my training.
With a lot of companies taking a hard second look at VMware since the Broadcom pricing changes, it’s been useful to know both platforms first-hand.
